ASUS Eee PC 1015PW peeks out of hiding with dual-core Atom, royal purple shell

Can you keep track of all the different variants of ASUS' Eee PC netbook? It's not easy when the Taiwanese computer company pumps out new ones nearly every month, but we doubt we'll easily forget the Eee PC 1015PW's distinctive shade of purple. Otherwise, TechinStyle reports it's much the same as the 1015PEM, which isn't a terrible thing -- it's got a dual-core 1.5GHz Intel Atom N550 CPU, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and a 250GB or 320GB hard drive under that chiclet keyboard, plus the usual 10.1-inch, 1024 x 600 LED-backlit screen. No word on pricing or availability, but the way these things usually go, you'll find it in Europe well before the States.

Chromium 9 debuts, versioning sticklers collectively howl

Google made it pretty clear that Chrome's new, faster release schedule was going to lead to a rather steep incline on the version number chart, but I'm starting to side with the sticklers here. Last night, Chromium hit version 9.

If you weren't keeping tabs, Chromium 8 was only released two weeks ago. Yep, two weeks. There have been a couple small visual tweaks that you'll notice right off the hop, the first being a promo panel for the Omnibox (image after the break). Also now on board: password sync support, which is enabled by default.

I'm curious, Download Squad readers. Does the version number in Chrome still mean anything to you at this point? To me, it really doesn't. There are five versions: Stable, Beta, Dev, Canary, and Chromium. Wherever they are in their evolution, that's what matters to me.

Is a New Orkut-to-Facebook Export Feature What?s Crashing Facebook?

Ah, the power of those emerging world eyeballs. According to commenters and tipsters, a big thing that could be crashing Facebook today is a new feature that allows people to link their Orkut profiles to Facebook via Facebook connect. (Screenshot on this post.) Jaimin Rajani of Tech.nolicio.us tells us it has only been live about an hour. This is important for two reasons: Brazil and India. Orkut is still by far the dominant social network in Brazil for the simple reason that that's where everyone's friends still are. And while Facebook has surpassed Orkut in India, Orkut is still a strong number two. From what I can tell, the swarm caught Facebook by surprise and I imagine it caught Google by even more surprise. For a company so intent on going social-- did they just bungle two of the huge markets where they had an edge? We've called both companies for comments and will post more when they get back to us.

Speedlink Cue does the multitouch hybrid mouse thing

Honestly, while Apple's Magic Mouse is a bit of a pioneer in its application of a multitouch surface on a "regular" tracking mouse, it's not exactly easy or comfortable to perform multitouch gestures with it. Plus there's the little problem of no official driver for Windows. Speedlink's Cue mouse looks to be solving at least one of those problems, maybe even both. The wireless 1000 dpi optical mouse is naturally PC-compatible, with software to allow you to configure your own gestures, and it has a somewhat flatter and more extensive touch surface than the Magic Mouse, which might make gestures a bit more doable. Basically, it's somewhere in between the Magic Mouse and the Magic Trackpad, minus the hyperbole, and plus clear demarcation of right and left click. It'll retail for €40 when it ships in November (about $56 USD).
